Putin says Denmark has long saw Greenland as colony

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has argued that Denmark has historically dealt with Greenland as a colonial territory, commenting amid renewed debate surrounding US President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring the self-governing Arctic island.

Trump repeated his position on the Danish-administered territory while attending an international economic gathering in Switzerland on Wednesday, while also stating that military force would not be used.

During a meeting with Russia’s national security leadership in Moscow, Putin criticized Copenhagen’s historical approach to Greenland, saying: “Denmark has always treated Greenland like a colony, and treated it quite harshly, if not to say cruelly.”

He emphasized that Russia has no involvement or interest in the dispute over Greenland’s status. “It definitely doesn’t concern us. I think they will sort it out among themselves.”

Putin also pointed to past territorial transactions involving the United States, noting that Washington purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 and later acquired what are now the US Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1916. He suggested that Greenland’s price could reach up to $1 billion and remarked that the United States would be financially capable of such a purchase.

According to reports, Russia’s foreign minister stated earlier in the week that Moscow has no intention of intervening in Greenland’s internal matters.

Meanwhile, Denmark’s foreign minister reiterated during the Davos forum that Copenhagen would not permit the United States to annex Greenland. Reports also noted that residents of the island held demonstrations opposing Trump earlier in the week.

Historically, Denmark established control over Greenland in the 18th century and granted the territory home rule in 1979. During World War II, US forces were deployed to the island, and Washington continues to operate an airbase along Greenland’s northwestern coast.
